T.J. Stiles is the author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War. He is currently at work on a biography of George Armstrong Custer, with the support of a Guggenheim fellowship

The First Tycoon won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the 2009 National Book Award for Nonfiction. It was named a New York Times Notable Book and one of the best books of the year by The New Yorker, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle, Kansas City Star, and the Washington Post.

Local History Lecture Series - Susan Shillinglaw, Steinbeck & Jeffers
Susan ShillinglawDr. Susan Shillinglaw is a professor of English at San Jose State University & Scholar-in-Residence at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. She has been Director of the Center for Steinbeck Studies (previously The Steinbeck Newsletter). She has published widely on Steinbeck, most recently A Journey in Steinbeck’s California (2006).

Join Susan Schillinglaw for a talk about two famous regional authors, John Steinbeck & Robinson Jeffers.

Gently Read Books for Sale - Friends of the Library

Members of the Friends of Harrison Memorial Library collect, sort, and price donated books all year and then hold a sale in August. Close to 10,000 books, paperbacks, and audio and video tapes are available. The sale is a lively, friendly event in a lovely setting. The proceeds are donated to the library. First Murphy House

You can donate books to our Book Sale by dropping them off at Sunset Center (San Carlos and 10th) on Tuesday mornings between 10:00 and 12:00. We will also pick your books up. To schedule a pick-up, call Ann Rurka at 625-3418. No condensed books, text books, records, or magazines, please.

The Friends of Harrison Memorial Library have also established an addition to their annual August book sale at the Heritage Society’s First Murphy House. A wide variety of donated, gently read books are for sale. The proceeds go to the library for the purchase of new books and materials.
The First Murphy House is open Fridays and Saturdays, 1 to 4 p.m. Knowledgeable docents are ready to share information about early Carmel. Stop by and enjoy one of Carmel’s first homes and the Friends’ ongoing book sale. The house is located on Lincoln at 6th. For more information call 831-624-4447.
